1. Algebraic Expressions
In 7th grade math, you will learn about algebraic expressions which are made up of variables, coefficients, and constants. Variables are the unknown values, coefficients are the constant multiples, and constants are fixed values. An algebraic expression can be simplified by combining like terms. For example:
3x + 4x + 2x = (3+4+2)x = 9x
2. Equations and Inequalities
Equations are mathematical expressions that use the equal sign to represent that two quantities are equivalent. Inequalities use symbols like >, <, ≥ or ≤ to represent that two quantities are not equal. To solve an equation, you can isolate the variable on one side and simplify the other side. For example:
3x + 2 = 11
3x = 11 - 2
3x = 9
x = 3
3. Geometry
Geometry in 7th grade math focuses on measuring and calculating various geometric shapes such as angles, triangles, circles, and polygons. You will also learn about the Pythagorean theorem which states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the longest side) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. The formula is:
c² = a² + b²
where c is the hypotenuse and a and b are the other two sides.
By memorizing and practicing these key concepts, you'll be able to confidently tackle 7th grade math problems.
