China's Voice in the Paris Peace Conference
The call for justice and equality
As one of the major powers that suffered tremendously from the First World War, China had high expectations for the outcome of the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. The Chinese delegation, represented by our leader Mr. Lou Tseng-Tsiang, had a clear and concise message to deliver - justice and equality. China was not seeking any territorial gains or punitive reparations, but merely wanted its rightful place among the international community to be recognized. Despite China's contribution to the war effort, it was treated as a second-class power and its sovereignty was repeatedly violated by foreign aggression and occupation. Therefore, we demanded the return of Shandong province from Japan, an end to extraterritoriality, and the abolition of the humiliating \"Twenty-One Demands\" imposed on China by Japan in 1915.The disappointment and betrayal
However, to our great dismay, China's appeals were largely ignored and we were pushed aside by the dominant Western powers, who were more interested in their own selfish interests and territorial ambitions. As a result, China was excluded from the Council of Four, the decision-making body of the Paris Peace Conference, and was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles without any substantial gains or concessions. Furthermore, the Allied powers decided to transfer the German concession in Shandong to Japan instead of returning it to China, despite our protest. This blatant betrayal of the principle of self-determination and equality dealt a severe blow to China's national dignity and provoked widespread indignation and resentment among the Chinese people. The legacy and challenge
Nearly a century has passed since the Paris Peace Conference, and China has undergone dramatic changes and development in various aspects. However, the legacy of the Conference still haunts us and reminds us of the importance of international justice and fairness. China has learned the hard way that the world is not always just and fair, and that we need to be strong and united in order to safeguard our national interests and dignity. Today, China is an active participant in the international arena and has made remarkable contributions to global peace and development. However, challenges and obstacles still remain, and we need to continue our efforts to promote dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect among nations. We believe that only through mutual understanding and trust can we achieve a world of lasting peace and prosperity, where justice and equality prevail. China will continue to play its part in this noble pursuit.
